Renowned Konkani Playwright, Sunny A D'Souza No More

SUNNY A D'SOUZA - A noted Konkani theatre artist, Director, playwright is no more. He went to heavenly abode today at 5.15 in Mangalore. Few months back he had shifted his base from Mumbai to Shirva, Mangalore

Known as "Sunnyaab" among his friends and well-wishers.  A reputed dramatist - contributed  immensely to All India Radio  and Konkani stage. His "Rakhtaachim Zaalim Dukham" and "Haasaanatul-lo Tho Piso"  were acclaimed to be the best.

 

Born 9th February 1937 in Bendore, Mangalore he lived in Mumbai for almost 45 years and was the sub-editor of Poinnari Konkani Weekly.

 

He was a regular contributor to Konkani magazines like Kanas, Vishal Konkan, Zag-Mag and Kutam.

 

Nach Konknya Nach, Bhangar Piklam, Rogtachim Zalim Dukham, Magon Ghetullo Khuris, Hasanatullo to Piso, Ghott Dhor Soddinaka are some of his plays.

 

He had also directed Konkani plays alongside veteran director Henry D’Silva Suratkal.


 
Although Sunny had lost a leg in a tram accident that occurred near Fort here in 1953, he continued to render his yeomen service in Konkani theater and journalism. His grit and determination in overcoming the disability was exemplary. He had been honoured by various Konkani organizations in Mumbai. He had also been awarded the titles of Nataratna and Kalaratna by Konkani organizations in recognition of his contributions to Konkani theater and art.

 

Funeral mass will be held at St Antony's Ashram at 9:00 am on Thursday, December 23, 2010 and thereafter the funeral cortege will leave for Cascia Church cemetary for burial.

Died at Mangalore on 22nd December 2010. Funeral mass at St. Anthony’s Chapel, Jeppu and burial at St. Rita’s Church, Cascia Cemetery, Mangalore on 23rd December at 9.00 a.m.
